Getting Around Melbourne

Metropolitan Transport

Melbourne has a very efficient and extensive public transport network of buses, trains and trams. You can buy a multi-modal Metcard, which allows you to travel on the three systems in any one day, or over a longer period if you are a frequent traveller.

For the city centre and inner suburbs, the trams are the way to go. Some are still the early twentieth century style, romantic and historic; while newer ones are funky mobile information screens as well as modes of transport. Outer suburbs are well-served by the bus and train network. For information on all metropolitan transport contact Vic Trip on www.victrip.com.au or 13 1638 or www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au.

If rivers are your thing, hop on the Yarra River Shuttle Service and see the city from the water. You can alight and board at Federation Square, Southgate, Melbourne Aquarium, Crown Entertainment Complex, Melbourne Exhibition Centre, Yarra's Edge, Victoria Harbour and Waterfront City/NewQuay. This service operates from 1st November 2005 to 23rd April 2006 and runs from Federation Square to the Docklands every 30 minutes every day. Tickets cost $9 adult, $5 concession, $19 family and children under 4 travel free.
