Melbourne Weather and Climate
Temperate. Cool winters and warm to hot summers, with rainfall fairly evenly spread throughout the year. Melbourne's weather is famously unpredictable. They say if you don't like it, hang around for half-an-hour and it'll change! Summer can be hot, but usually not for prolonged periods. Be prepared for anything.
It's always wise to have an umbrella and jacket handy, even on warm days, as the skies can open and the temperature drop suddenly. Winters can be nippy and you'll need a warm coat outdoors. However, Melbourne seems to ignore its climate and there are still plenty of outdoor activities in the colder months. Al fresco dining is possible all year round, with canopies, waterproof screens and gas heaters defying the weather.
Mean daily temperatures and monthly rainfall for Melbourne throughout the year are set out in the table below. Remember these are mean figures, and summer temperatures can be MUCH higher.
